Contact lens users should not keep their lenses in their eyes overnight, even if they are of the long-wear kind. The danger is with ulcerative keratitis, ulceration, and inflammation of the cornea ( the clear tissue that covers the front of the eye). Those who use extended-wear soft lenses and leave them in the eyes overnight are 10 to 15 times more likely to develop ulcerative keratitis than those who take out their lenses each night. The risk goes up for each day the lens is left in the eye.
Daily-wear soft lens users who sometimes leave their lenses in overnight run a risk nine times higher than those who do not.
